Human Rights Day:
Rally for Economic Human Rights! Friday, December 10, 2010, 12:00pm (noon) - 2:00pm Rally at Congress Square in Portland, Maine. Congress Square is located at the corner of Congress St & High St. Sponsored by the Maine Poor People's Economic Human Rights Coalition For more information, please call Laurel Merchant, at 207-761-7936. Supporters of economic human rights in Maine will celebrate the 62nd anniversary of the International Declaration of Human Rights with a rally at "Congress Square Park" at the corner of High and Congress Streets in downtown Portland from noon to 2 PM. Although human rights advocates have observed the anniversary for many years because of the document's promotion of political and social rights, the newly formed Maine Poor People's Economic Human Rights Coalition (Maine PPEHRC) is also highlighting the Declaration's economic human rights provisions as well, especially Articles 23, 25, and 26. The declaration was passed on December 10, 1948, with the strong support of political leaders from many countries, including Eleanor Roosevelt. However, the US has never ratified the declaration as a guideline for its own citizens. The rally will provide a place to highlight the need for low income and underpaid Maine people to be guaranteed a living wage or enough income to meet their basic needs. Almost without exception, minimum wage jobs are not providing enough for workers to meet those needs, and high unemployment in the midst of an economic recession/ depression is creating an even bigger gap between wealthy and the underpaid. Speakers will be talking about how the economy is not set up to provide adequate income for all workers, how the wealthy are still benefiting while working people are being hurt, and how guarantees of economic human rights can solve this problem. They will also be telling their own personal stories of economic discrimination. A copy of the International Declaration of Human Rights will be displayed during the rally. For more information on the rally, contact Laurel Merchant at 207-761-7936, especially between noon and 6 PM. ( TOP ) November 5, 2010 Whose

( TOP ) June 22-26, 2010 Help
send a Maine delegation
( TOP )to the US Social Forum! The US Social Forum is from June 22-26, 2010 in Detroit, Michigan. Donations and help with transportation are needed to help send a delegation of low-income Mainers to this amazing event. If you can help in any way and/or if you would like to join this delegation, please read below & get in touch with our friends at the Maine Poor People's Economic Human Rights Coalition (of which POWER is an organizational member). Thank you! Are you planning to go to the US Social Forum from June 22-26, or do you know others who want to go? A large contingent of people from Maine would be a wonderful thing. There are people who want to go but need help with transportation, either a donation to help them pay for travel, a space in a car if you are going or know someone who is, or a vehicle that could be borrowed and used to travel to and from Detroit. Some important ways you can help are: 1) Send a donation made out to 'Maine PPEHRC' (Maine Poor People's Economic Human Rights Coalition) and mail to Maine PPEHRC, PO Box 105, Fairfield, ME 04937. 2) If you have room in a vehicle or know of a vehicle that can be borrowed for 8-9 days, please contact Jan/Marlene, 207-453-2353. (Donations are also tax deductible if made out to ROSC.) What's the US Social Forum? Here are some details below, and there's a lot more on the web site. As many as 20,000 people are expected! It won't get much press in mainstream media, but this will be a big event for peace, justice, and the environment movement in the US. I hope you can support it in some way. WHAT IS THE US SOCIAL FORUM? The US Social Forum (USSF) is a MOVEMENT BUILDING process. It is not a conference but it is a space to come up with the peoples’ solutions to the economic and ecological crisis. The USSF is the next most important step in our struggle to build a powerful multi-racial, multi-sectoral, inter-generational, diverse, inclusive, internationalist movement that transforms this country, and changes history. The US Social Forum is more than a networking bonanza, more than a reaction to war and repression. The USSF will provide space to BUILD RELATIONSHIPS, learn from each others experiences, share our analysis of the problems our communities face, and bring renewed insight and inspiration. It will help develop leadership and develop consciousness, vision, and strategy needed to realize another world. THE USSF SENDS A MESSAGE to other people’s movements around the world that there is an active movement in the US challenging US Policies at home and abroad. WE MUST DECLARE WHAT WE WANT our world to look like and begin planning the path to get there. A global movement is rising. The USSF is our opportunity to demonstrate to the world Another World is Possible! People world-wide know that another world is needed. The SOCIAL FORUM movement has been building for years and believes that it's possible. From June 22-26, 2010 in DETROIT, folks from all over the country will gather to think about what kind of world is needed and how we can get there. The US SOCIAL FORUM is a very special kind of gathering- one that has never taken place in this country up to now. It isn't a conference with an agenda and a program of events; it's a convergence of movements, communities & cultures whose participants produce our own agenda and our own programs. The mere process of planning, organizing and building relationships will move you, the people you're working with and the rest of us forward. The moment you think of an idea, you are already participating in the Social Forum. Detroit & the Midwest are welcome folks from the US and abroad into their home. Please join us. Goals for the 2010 US Social Forum in Detroit, MI, June 22-26, are to: * To create a space for social movement convergence & strategic discussion; * To advance social movements' agendas for action & transformation; * To build stronger relationships & collaboration between movements; * To deepen our commitment to international solidarity & common struggle; * To strengthen our capacity to improve local social conditions, organizing, & movement building in Detroit For logistics, details, registration & exciting updates, please visit: the US Social Forum website at: www.ussf2010.org. Saturday, May 1, 2010 2:30pm march, 3:30pm - rally in Congress Sq, Portland, Maine We march for unity and dignity for all Maine families and workers! We are fighting to: * Keep Families Together * Restore Due Process * Eliminate Racial Profiling * Demand Worker's Rights * End Raids and Deportations * Create Paths to Citizenship
( TOP ) Mar 18 & 19, 2010 It's ANTHEM vs.
MAINE, and Maine needs your help!
March 18, 2010, 5:00PM - RALLY & PROTEST! MARCH 19, 2010 8:00PM - PACK THE COURTHOUSE! Both events will take place at the Cumberland County Courthouse in Portland, Maine Sponsored by our friends at Maine Peoples Alliance and other allies in our community. The cost of health insurance keeps skyrocketing, and Anthem keeps profiting. Now, they are suing the State for the right to charge Mainers even more for the health insurance we ALREADY can't afford. But Anthem and Maine will square off in court on March 19, and Maine needs your help! JOIN THE PROTEST: For the last year, thousands of Mainers have been fighting Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield's attempts to jack up their premiums as much as 35% on individuals. We have worked together to get the state to make Anthem keep the rate hikes down, but now Anthem is suing Maine for a guaranteed 3% profit. Dozens of organizations, faith leaders, and hundreds of activists are calling for a two-day mobilization in Portland right before the court hearing to show Anthem that Maine will NEVER back down in the fight for quality, affordable health care for all. MARCH 18, 5pm - RALLY & PROTEST! The night before the hearing, join hundreds of Mainers outside the Cumberland County Courthouse to protest Anthem's greed. MARCH 19, 8am - PACK THE COURTHOUSE! Help us fill the courtroom and the park outside to support Maine in its fight against the greed that hurts our families. Here's the skinny: Last year, Anthem asked for an 18% rate hike for certain policyholders. After holding hearings, Maine's Superintendent of Insurance denied that request but did grant Anthem a 10.9% rate increase. That wasn't enough for Anthem! They decided to file a lawsuit against the state of Maine to ensure a guaranteed profit at a time when many Mainers are struggling just to make ends meet. That case hasn't even been heard yet, and Anthem has already requested an additional 23% rate increase on the same policyholders on top of what they are suing for. Wellpoint, Anthem's parent company, made $2.7 billion dollars just in the 4th quarter of 2009, yet they are now asking Mainers to pay even more. We have a unique opportunity. The March 18 rally will have a strong impact by reminding the public that, without reform, they are left to the whim of Anthem's greed. Without passing health care reform, our elected officials will also be letting us down. Now is the time to take a stand, and every person can make a difference. It will be exciting, historic and memorable - but it takes all of us standing together. NOW IS THE TIME - HELP MOBILIZE - TELL YOUR FRIENDS! ( TOP ) Dec 21, 2009 Two Vigils Commemorating

"There are millions of poor people in this country who have very little, or even nothing to lose. If they can be helped to take action together, they will do so with a freedom and a power that will be a new and UNSETTLING FORCE in our complacent national life." -- Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., from "Trumpet of Conscience," 1967 Abolish poverty in these times of increasing homelessness, hunger, and unemployment? We say "yes" and turn to the wisdoms of Martin Luther King Jr., who envisioned a movement led by an organized "unsettling force" built across racial lines that would spark a "revolution of values" to reorganize our society. As we confront the life and death struggles in our communities, the daily Katrinas of hunger, homelessness, downsizing, the denial of the rights to health care, heat and water, and the destruction of our families simply because we are poor, we will come together to envision, strategize and organize for “Another United States” and “Another World.” Join us! More about Cheri Honkala As a single mother of two sons, Cheri experienced raising a child while moving in and out of homelessness. She is a former history teacher and social worker. In 1991, she started the Kensington Welfare Rights Union (KWRU) with a group of mothers on welfare. KWRU leads poor Philadelphia families in the struggle for living wage jobs, health care, housing for everyone and daily survival. In the past decade, Cheri and the KWRU have secured housing for more than 500 families by taking over abandoned housing, pressuring city agencies to address people’s housing needs and building homeless encampments. Cheri has spoken around the world about the struggle against poverty in the U.S. She has been arrested dozens of times for non-violent civil disobedience and for attempts to prevent the poor from being ‘disappeared’ in the richest country in the world. Join us as Cheri Honkala, a national organizer & activist with the Poor People's Economic Human Rights Campaign helps us to understand the economic human rights crisis in our nation and how we can develop strategies and connections to create a state and national movement led by the poor people of this country. We welcome both poor people and their allies to this action planning day. What Are Economic Human Rights? Economic Human Rights include the RIGHT to: - Quality health care, - A job or income, living wages, equal pay, and the ability to join a union - Affordable housing, - Adequate and nutritional food - Free education, and - A decent standard of living. Just as we have a right to free speech, to practice our religion, to trial by jury, and to other political rights, the right to participate actively in our economy and to have our basic needs met ought to be a right as well. It is in most European and other industrialized countries. We work hard, but many of us get paid very little. We are told it is our fault if we don't make lots of money. Making an adequate wage is a privilege, not a right. But, we are not at fault. It's a bad economic system that's the problem! Countries where people have economic human rights have much less poverty and a higher standard of living for lower income people. Let's end poverty in the US by claiming our economic human rights for everyone! Join us on April 4th to plan how to promote economic human rights in Maine! Schedule for the Day 8:30-9 AM: Registration 9-9:30 AM: Introductions (who's here and why?) 9:30-10 AM: What Is Economic Human Rights (EHR)--A Human Rights Framework 10-10:30 AM: EHR film shown 10:30-10:45--Break 10:45-11:20: Poor People's Economic Human Rights Campaign model 11:20-noon: Connecting the Organizing Model to Maine noon-1:30 PM: Lunch--Bring a potluck food item to share & a chance to network & meet others 1:30-2 PM: Small Groups doing problem solving for EHR in Maine 2-2:30 PM: Building Leadership 2:30-3 PM: The Role of Allies 3-3:30 PM: Obstacles to Organizing in Maine 3:30-4 PM: What next? and future organizing/action efforts (Some of these 30 minute time blocks may be a little longer or shorter) You don't need experience with EHR or organizing to attend this day, just an interest in getting economic human rights out there to the people in Maine! Poverty & Economic Security Monday Oct 27th, 9:00AM - 4:00PM At the Augusta Civic Center in Augusta, Maine Organized by Maine Community Action Association: www.endingpovertyinmaine.org IN THE NEWS: > Poverty symposium targets 'chronic' symptom: hunger - Kennebec Journal --10/28/08 > Economic Symposium - WABI TV5 News Desk --10/28/08 > POWER member speaks at Maine Poverty Symposium - Joe Public Films -- 10/27/08 In the year 2008, in a nation with the largest economy in the world, there are more than 37 million people living in poverty and far more unable to make ends meet. We have the highest child poverty rate of all industrialized nations. Here in Maine, there are more than 130,000 people living in poverty including more than 14 percent of all children. Poverty exacts a human and financial toll that has become too great to bear. It is a condition that hinders human and community development. It constrains budgets and stilts economic growth. To better our communities and labor force and to allow all Maine people the opportunity to flourish, we will have to rethink the way we fight poverty. Join us at this year’s poverty symposium as we evaluate past policies, ponder underutilized resources, and propose new ideas for ending poverty. ( TOP ) Jun 11, 2008 Sound

The rally was one of the biggest ever to be held at the state house. Together the people of Maine stood up and prevented some of the very serious cuts to services recently proposed by the legislature to offset a $190 million hole in the state budget. These cuts were prevented thanks to Maine people who stood up, spoke up, & demanded that Maine can do better, that we must not balance its budget on the backs of our state's most vulnerable people, including those of us who are barely getting by as it is. However, while we prevented some of the deepest cuts, unfortunately some harmful cuts were made. is now available on

This incredible new documentary on the US healthcare crisis is now available at your local video store. Watch the trailer for SiCKO! More information about SiCKO: Sicko investigates
and exposes the devastating human costs of the health care crisis in
America, focusing on the corruption, complicity, and the relentless
drive for profits on the part of the health care industry's many
players, including health insurance companies, pharmaceutical
companies, managed care companies, the U.S. Congress and other
government officials, healthcare lobbyists, and even the U.S. Food and
Drug
Administration. In an effort to get to the heart of the matter, Moore
requested "Health Care Horror Stories" from
the
public.
The response turned out to be overwhelming. When asked about this
movie, Michael Moore said, "If people
ask, we tell them 'Sicko' is a comedy about 45 million people with no
health care in the richest country on Earth." Sicko
was selected for the 2007 Cannes Film Festival where
it had its world premiere on May 19, 2007.
In the film, Michael Moore accompanies a number of rescue workers and
first responders injured while responding to the
9/11 World Trade Center attacks to the U.S. Guantanamo Bay
detainment camp (an American territory), to seek the medical treatment
they needed, which they could not get at home in the United
States. When unable to receive care there, they
move on to
Havana, Cuba, where they finally received the treatment they need, and
at
no cost. The New York Post quoted
John Feal, head of the Fealgood
Foundation which raises money for 9/11
first responders as saying that “From what I hear
through the
grapevine
those people who went [to Cuba with Moore] are utterly happy."
In an interview with Time Magazine, Moore states "I’m not
trumpeting Castro or his regime. I just want to say to fellow
Americans, "C’mon, we’re the United States! If they
can
[provide high quality care for all] we can do it."
The film also covers Moore's travels to Canada, France and
the United
Kingdom, investigating their health care systems and
comparing them to
those provided in the United States.
Treasury Department probe: In
a May 2, 2007 letter, the Office
of Foreign Assets Control
informed Moore that he was the subject of a civil investigation
stemming from the filmmaker's March trip to Cuba. In the
letter to
Moore, a Treasury official noted that the department had no record of
Moore obtaining a license that authorized him to "engage in
travel-related transactions involving Cuba," alleging that Moore
violated the United
States embargo against Cuba.
A master copy of the film is being held outside the U.S. in case
American authorities attempt to seize the film as part of the criminal
investigation against Moore that arose from taking American 9/11 rescue
workers to Cuba for medical treatment.( TOP ) Jun 28, 2007 Portland Speaks Out! FCC Public
