Why donate to POWER?

If you're someone who believes in POWER's work to win economic rights & abolish poverty, we'd like to take a moment to encourage you to demonstrate your support by making a donation, in any possible amount. Each and every donation helps to ensure that POWER can continue to carry out this important work.

POWER is about as grassroots as any organization could possibly be. We are run entirely by  volunteer members, and we operate on a TINY budget. With absolutely no paid staff whatsoever, every single day fellow POWER members volunteer to carry out the many often thankless tasks required to keep an organization afloat.

In addition to having a leadership base of poor and low-income people, the vast majority of us volunteering are struggling economically ourselves. Collectively organizing and reaching out to fellow low-income people and allies while at the same time juggling our own individual economic challenges can be a very tall order. For many of us, the one thing we can afford to donate is our time, and, even this isn't easy to give, especially for those of us dealing with various economic pressures, such as working multiple jobs, and/or raising a family, and/or managing with medical problems and/or disabilities, and/or being homelessness, and/or going to school, and/or struggling to find work, etc. Even still, some of us skimp on paying our own bills in order to help POWER pay for things like stamps, photocopies, internet access, phone calls, or gas, and more than once we've pooled together what little resources we have to help a fellow member confront an emergency. We do this because we believe in this organization, because every word of our mission represents something worth fighting for. For us, working to end poverty is not a choice - we can't afford not to. No matter that it's an uphill battle, no matter how hard we have to push against the tide. It simply must be done.

Coming up with the resources we need is a constant challenge. No matter how resourceful we are, come the end of the day, just like everyone else, our bills need to get paid. To this end, we'd like to share a saying that we learned from fellow leaders of the Poor People's Economic Human Rights Campaign: "An organization can't run on love alone." And that's a fact -- an organization can't run without resources; because no matter how big our hearts are, love alone won't fill the gas tank, pay the phone bill, or buy stamps -- it takes money. And for those who truly care about economic justice & ending poverty, it's never been more important that you put your money where your heart is and invest in what you value.

As POWER's mission states, together we are building a local movement to win economic rights, end economic oppression, & abolish poverty. Whether it's 5 cents or 50 dollars - every penny that you contribute to POWER is an investment in justice. With your support, together we can carry out this mission & build this movement. Please donate today!
